British Thoracic Society guidelines advise that scuba diving should be avoided indefinitely after a pneumothorax unless a definitive procedure such as surgical pleurectomy has been performed. This is because of the risk of recurrent pneumothorax underwater, the expansion of a pneumothorax that may develop during ascent, and the risk of resultant tension pneumothorax. For professional divers a decision to offer definitive surgical management after the first pneumothorax episode may allow safe reintroduction to diving.
